At Foxes Farm Produce, we harvest wholesale pumpkins in August and with the right storage techniques, those same pumpkins will still look fresh right through to Halloween.
Before storage, it’s best to cure them: we leave them in a warm, well-ventilated spot to harden the skin and seal minor surface damage. In milder UK weather, this might mean a sheltered sunny spot or a warm barn.
Top Tips for Storing Pumpkins for October
Here’s how to keep your bulk pumpkins in tip-top shape all the way to Halloween:
1. Clean & Disinfect for Freshness
Wash them and wipe, then let them dry fully. This helps deter rot-causing microbes.
2. Choose the Right Spot
Store pumpkins in a cool, dry, dark and well-ventilated area. set them on concrete, as this encourages rotting; instead, use straw, cardboard, or wooden shelving.
3. Give Them Their Space
Keep pumpkins from touching one another, good airflow prevents moisture buildup and mould.
4. Keep Them Cool, Not Cold
Ambient room temperature is ideal. Colder temperatures (like frost or freezers) damage the skin and shorten longevity.
5. Revive When Needed
If a pumpkin starts to shrivel, a quick soak in cold water can revive it!
